Located on the east coast of the island, Awana has a white, sandy surf beach. Activities include surfing, tramping, swimming, fishing, diving and snorkelling. A camping ground is located within Awana for accommodation.
Located on the east coast of the island, Kaitoke has a white, sandy surf beach. Activities include surfing, tramping, swimming, hot springs, fishing, golf, beach walking and tennis. The airport is at Claris along with other facilities including Auckland City Council area office, Civil Defense HQ, Credit Union, library, shops, post office, garage, LPG filling station, hire centre, chemist, sports and social club and more.
Medlands Beach is located at the south-eastern coast of Great Barrier and is famous for its white sand and great surf. There is a range of accommodation available along with the church and a boat launching ramp. Activities include swimming, surfing, beach walking, tramping and fishing.
Located on the northern end of the island, Port FitzRoy is a sheltered west coast harbour, with the white sandy beach Okiwi to the east. Facilities include an airport at Okiwi and a shop, bottle store, information / rental car office (open year round), wharf, dive filling station, boat launching ramp and DOC office at Port FitzRoy. There is also a district nurse who is based in Port FitzRoy.
Located at the south-western coast of Great Barrier are the sandy and rocky tidal flats that make Tryphena unique. The passenger ferry docks here making it one of the most popular spots on the island. There is a range of accommodation and activities include swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, fishing, boat hire, island tours and charter boats.
The climb to the top of Windy Canyon is Great Barrier Island's most spectacular short walk, winding around striking rocky outcrops to a breathtaking view of the island.
Located in the centre of Great Barrier Island, Whangaparapara has a lodge, backpackers and campground for visitors to stay at while making the most of the amazing terrain. The beach is mainly rocky, but the native bush offers great tramping, natural hot springs, kayaking and historic sites.
